Abstract There is a continuing need in the arts for practical applications of color theories. Many existing color‐harmony theories can be grouped into two categories: those based on complementary color relationships and those based on a common color denominator. Publication of Ellen Marx's book, Optical Color and Simultaneity , makes new applications of complementary harmony possible, while the existence of the OSA Uniform Color Scales samples makes possible new applications of common denominator as well as complementary color theories.
