The purpose of this book is to present a program of basic exercise and activity for daily living that can be taught to patients with disabilities of the lower extremities. Its senior author, Edith Buchwald is a registered physical therapist and the director of rehabilitation courses for physical therapists at the Institute of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, New York University—Bellevue Medical Center. Her collaborators were Drs. Howard A. Rusk, George G. Deaver, and Donald A. Covalt of the same institute. The members of this team have jointly produced an illustrated manual that serves as a guide in the teaching of an "A. D. L. program" (Activities of Daily Living). The manual contains seven chapters and is well illustrated. In chapter 1 it is pointed out that the goal of the program is functional training, which involves the physical rehabilitation of the patient in order to enable him to handle himself
