Abstract Statistical analysis of Mousterian assemblages shows that they can be classified into several discrete types. It remains to explain the reasons for these differences. Two main points of view are possible: either they represent different traditions, or they represent different activities carried on at different places or times by essentially the same kind of people. The authors give their reasons for favouring the former interpretation.
