As we have thought about objective, fixed-response questions there have been recurrent themes of unease. In a previous paper in this journal (CERAPIE 2000,Vol. 1, No. 3, pp. 323-328) we set out evidence from the literature and from our own research, that the "conventional" forms of fixed response questions had serious drawbacks.
