Introduction and Objective: Effective care models are needed for youth with type 2 diabetes (YT2D). Shared medical appointments using group education modules benefitted youth with T1D. This study aimed to design group education modules called Team Clinic for T2D (TCT2) with input from primarily Latinx, publicly insured YT2D, caregivers, and clinicians. Methods: An iterative human-centered design process was used to develop and refine bilingual English-Spanish curricula. YT2D eligibility included ages 12-18, English fluency, and use of diabetes medication. Caregivers could be either English or Spanish fluent. Clinicians were eligible if they provided care to YT2D. Prototypes were evaluated at one site, revised based on stakeholder feedback, and re-evaluated at a second site. After each round of mixed methods data collection, feedback was integrated by a multidisciplinary team using rapid qualitative inquiry. Results: Participants were 15 YT2D (age 14.6±1.9 yr, 60% female), 16 caregivers, and 12 clinicians. Qualitative data revealed five design themes: 1) curriculum must fit allotted time, 2) include older and younger YT2D together, 3) anticipate youth social inhibition, 4) respect health beliefs, and 5) support youth/caregiver understanding of T2D. Iterative prototyping improved materials by 1) streamlining content, 2) increasing multimodal teaching strategies, 3) enhancing cultural relevance, and 4) replacing a poorly received peer interaction module with one addressing common T2D beliefs and knowledge gaps. The final curriculum included four modules: Diabetes Basics, Nutrition, Fitness, and Stress Management. Conclusion: Engaging stakeholders in designing the TCT2 curriculum improved clarity and suitability of materials. This process may guide clinicians and researchers in selecting content and strategies that support T2D self-management while respecting health beliefs among Latinx YT2D and their families.
