Abstract In wet gas lines, there is a critical water condensation rate (CWCR) above which top of line corrosion (TLC) takes place. When this limit is exceeded, TLC rate increases with increasing water condensation rate and increasing demand of iron for saturating/ super-saturating the condensed water. The influence of the temperature is also very important for the same reason. Organic acids, if present, have a strong influence on the TLC rate. The risk of TLC rate was evaluated for gas lines from four different gas fields and the results were compared to the inspection pigging and UT inspection results and a good agreement was obtained. It seems that the CWCR in wet multiphase gas lines is between 0.15 and 0.25 ml/(m2.s) depending on the water wetted portion of the pipe surface that was considered for the CWCR calculation. The water condensation can be prevented by application of heat insulated coatings, use of cladded pipes or by pipe burial at an appropriate depth.
