Pregnancy Outcomes in Women With Vascular Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome Provide High Mortality Rates

( BJOG . 2025;132:220-221. doi: 10.1111/1471-0528.17961) This article is a mini commentary surrounding the study by Haem et al focusing on pregnancy outcomes for women with vascular Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (vEDS). In many cases, those with a diagnosis of vEDS are advised not to become pregnant. Interestingly, in many cases, the condition is not known before pregnancy, or it was decided to pursue a pregnancy despite the disease and risks. Due to this clinical advice, pregnancy counseling has been difficult in this population due to the lack of evidence on pregnancy outcomes. Some research has reported a maternal mortality rate as high as 25% in individuals with vEDS. This systematic review, however, reports the mortality rate at a much lower 5.7%, including approximately 50% of cases that were not diagnosed before pregnancy.
