Virtual addiction, often called Internet or technology addiction, is a phenomenon in which people, including children, develop excessive and compulsive behaviors associated with the use of socio-digital technologies and online activities. This kind of addiction manifests itself in various forms, such as gaming addiction, social media addiction, or general internet addiction. Children of the 21st century are avid users of technology, and they use them more than previous generations. This can be explained by the fact that the expansion of the use of technology coincides with the first decade of the 21st century. This increase in use has led to an increased focus on the implications of technology use and how it affects children's brains and their socio-emotional, cognitive and physical development.
