Abstract

The purpose of this study was to explore the experiences of users of a dementia care center during non-face-to-face group art therapy implemented to improve quality of life due to COVID-19, and the meaning of these experiences. To this end, seven users of the Dementia Care Center in District D, Seoul, were selected as participants. Non-face-to-face group art therapy was conducted once a week for a total of 46 sessions. Data from session data, interviews, and participants' writings and drawings posted on social media were collected and analyzed. The conclusions of this study are as follows: First, participants learned how to cope with the challenges of old age through creative art activities. Second, participants regained a sense of connection with the world through online and smart device use. Third, participants formed social relationships and enhanced interaction by communicating with others through their drawings. The findings of this study will provide a foundation for the development of social and emotional programs utilizing digital media for older adults who have become accustomed to using smart devices since the COVID-19 outbreak.
