This article addresses the importance of the careful selection of materials in contemporary design and how this process can be enhanced through direct interaction with material exhibitions combined with the study of specialized bibliography available in academic libraries. The methodology combines a literature review and an analysis of practical experiences in educational institutions, where exhibitions, competitions, and challenges allow students and professionals to explore the physical, aesthetic, and functional properties of materials. This sensory experience complements the technical knowledge acquired from books, making material selection more well-founded and assertive. Additionally, initiatives such as industry partnerships and academic challenges encourage experimentation and innovation. The results indicate that the integration of theory and practice strengthens the training of designers, ensuring safer and more sustainable choices in projects. The study highlights the importance of continuing these strategies and evaluating their impact on professional qualification in the design field.
