Welfare for people made homeless by disasters: the case of temporary housing in Rio Grande do Sul

The objective of this article was to identify the environmental characteristics that promote perceptions of well-being in post-disaster temporary housing. To this end, interviews were conducted with victims of displacement due to disasters in the state of Rio Grande do Sul/Brazil in May 2024. The result was the analysis of three categories and the creation of graphs resulting from the applied technique - where the participants were presented with images of references of temporary housing with different types of materials, typologies, implementation and layout, so that they could choose according to their perception of well-being. Although the uncertainty associated with the post-disaster period often obscures issues related to well-being, the use of environmental features that promote this feeling can be a very effective measure to prevent long-term negative effects on the mental health of homeless people.
