Nicolae Donich, a Romanian scientist and member of the Romanian Academy, was among the first members of the International Astronomical Union. In 1908, he founded a private observatory in Dubasarii Vechi, Bessarabia, which became a reference center for solar research. After the annexation of Bessarabia in 1940, the observatory was devastated. Post-1990 rehabilitation efforts brought his contributions back into focus. The suitable form for a heritage site in Dubasarii Vechi would be the "Nicolae Donich Astrophysics Observatory Complex."
