This contribution presents the life and key achievements of Yuriy D. Apresyan (1930–2024), a world-famous scholar of Russian and English, theoretician of language, methodologist, lexicographer, co-founder (with Igor Mel’chuk) of the Moscow Semantic School. Apresyan devoted his career to developing a model of systemic and integral description of language, testing his theory by compiling original mono- and bilingual dictionaries. While being dedicated to scholarship, he prioritised fidelity to values and defence of human rights. Because of his uncompromising stance in this respect, he suffered painful consequences but never abandoned research, even if it had to be conducted in dramatically difficult conditions. Apresyan was admired by several generations of younger linguists. His influence on Polish linguistics came through publications, conference talks, and invited lectures. Yuriy Apresyan was friends with many Polish scholars.
