The article is devoted to the study of neo-derivatives formed on the basis of proper names and functioning in a media text. The aim of the work is to identify the functional potential of onym-based formations of the latest period encountered in the media. The scientific novelty of the study lies in the fact that the authors for the first time established the most productive way of forming onym-based neo-derivatives and determined their main function in a small informational-analytical media text. The results of the study showed that onym-based neo-derivatives belong to occasionalisms (author’s neologisms), the main methods of formation of which are prefixation, suffixation and addition. At the same time, the qualitative and quantitative analysis of the studied material showed that the most productive way of word formation of onym-based derivatives is suffixation, and their main function in a media text is emotional and evaluative, which is explained, firstly, by the fact that proper names are often more emotionally colored, since any name has certain extralinguistic associations. Secondly, a modern media text has a high degree of expressiveness due to the need to attract as many readers as possible.
