India has begun to expand and consolidate its prowess in the maritime domain. Policy initiatives become a sine qua non to institutionalize and rationalize such endeavors. The inescapable factor of geography often impels such policies. The enunciation of the Security and Growth for All in the Region (SAGAR) policy by the Indian state in 2015 can be perceived in this light. It aims to enhance India’s political, security, and economic cooperation with other states in the Indian Ocean Region. The theoretical framework, as envisaged in the policy, requires a force multiplier to enhance its outreach. The geopolitical asset of Lakshadweep ensures it. The article attempts to analyze the SAGAR initiative with reference to Lakshadweep by employing a classical geopolitical approach. It also endeavors to critically evaluate the SAGAR initiative using a Strength, Weakness, Opportunity, and Threat (SWOT) model.
