The article presents an analysis of the contradictions in the understanding of the national idea and ideology existing in the Russian political and political science discourse. The rhetoric of the President of Russia VV Putin about his vision of the national idea of the country, set out in public speeches for 2014-2024, has been studied. The views and suggestions of leading researchers on the vision of the national idea and its correlation with various forms of political ideology are presented. On the basis of the analyzed material, the demarcation between the national idea and ideology is carried out, the justification for the need to avoid the adoption of a state ideology in the Russian Federation is presented.
