Abstract Communication is fundamental in healthcare, especially in the medical sphere, where the quality of interaction between professionals and patients may influence the understanding of diagnoses, therapeutic choices and the care required. This article explores the complexity and impact of difficult news, highlighting the importance of qualified listening; medical training about the role of empathy and bonding with patients and their families; and the outcome of communication in physical and mental health, highlighting the need for strategies to improve professionals’ communication skills. The methodology applied in preparing this study was epistemological, interdisciplinary and qualitative, based on bibliographical research in scientific literature available on digital platforms. The discussion aims to promote more empathetic and patient-centered practices, highlighting the importance of simple, responsible, sensitive and effective communication in healthcare environments.
