Motivation: To assess the potential of 7T ihMT as a strategy with semisolid specificity to myelin and to enhance ihMT contrast using a 3D centric gradient echo readout. Goal(s): To assess the contrast enhancements achieved by transitioning from MT to ihMT contrast and to evaluate the effects of modifications in readout sampling techniques. Approach: Comparing contrast differences between white matter and gray matter using various imaging strategies, such as MTsat and ihMT contrast, with a 3D centric gradient echo readout. Results: Using ihMT employing a 3D centric gradient echo readout increased the WM/GM contrast by a factor of 2 compared to the MTsat approach. Impact: Acquiring 7T ihMT with a 3D centric spiral gradient echo readout potentially enhances specificity and contrast between WM and GM. This approach has the potential to improve the myelin contrast, enabling more precise clinical assessments in spinal neurological pathologies.
