Will Sustained Yield in Lumber Operation Come Through Regulation or Through Competition?

Abstract Public regulation of the kind usually discussed will not convert timber owners to sustained yield operation. Sustained yield management is more likely to come through regulation of a more acceptable form pins competition, with competition more effective than regulation. The conflict between period operation and sustained-yield operation is just becoming apparent. The author presents data to show that the former is more profitable than the latter.
