Abstract Forest plantations have been established in the Central States with varying degrees of success. When one considers the diverse conditions under which these plantings were made, it is not surprising that there have been many failures. Foresters have had very little accurate knowledge upon which to base a prediction of success. This has been especially true in the case of soil and site appraisals. A striking example of growth variation is here correlated with the soil and site conditions, to bring out the relationships.
