Abstract Hybrid poplars have shown exceptionally rapid growth under favorable conditions, but when planted in soddy fields their performance has been disappointing. In the experiment reported herewith the hybrids did best where the sod was turned under and the sod-free area was weeded during the first growing season. This experiment and a survey of related literature lead the author to suggest that the widespread difficulties encountered in planting hardwoods may be largely overcome by site preparation and after care.
