Abstract The author, sympathetic to the interests of cattle ranchers, settlers, hunters, fishermen, and public land management agencies reviews the current public land contest of the West in its historical and economic settling. He points out new problems that will arise if current legislation proposed by stockmen and backed by the Chamber of Commerce becomes law. He advocates caution and full examination of facts before policies are enacted that may cause further conflict in use and deterioration of resources. Because of the significance of this problem to the entire conservation program foresters need to be as completely informed as possible. Hence this paper is published in the Journal of Forestry even though it will later be published elsewhere.
