Abstract The situation in New York illustrates what has happened in a number of eastern states. Why isn't this state more nearly self-sufficient in timber production? It has the available forest land and can grow species with the required properties, but produces only seven percent of the lumber it uses. The author discussed this, and issues the challenge that foresters have given marketing far too little attention to the detriment of forestry which must be put on a business basis if it is to endure.
