ABSTRACT The Beatles apprenticed in musicianship by learning American soul and R&B and reviving a style long thought to be in decline. When the Motown and Stax labels began covering the Beatles, new layers of meaning appeared. In tracks by admiring soul figures like Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett, and Otis Redding, Tim Riley traces how the Beatles’ influence can still be felt in Motown, Stax, and Atlantic recordings by Black Americans.
