This article describes current issues in higher education undergraduate enrollment and highlights trends critical for Texas colleges and universities. The authors explain demographic shifts and population characteristics influencing enrollment across the state, including generational trends, Latinx populations, and post-traditional students. In addition, current institutional, state and federal policy issues, such as the revisions to FAFSA, test-optional admissions, and legislation restricting diversity programs on campus, are explained for the impact on recruitment and retention activities.The article closes by identifying how institutions and student affairs units can respond to better meet the needs of today’s students. Recommendations discussed include flexible and career-oriented academic programs, affordability efforts, and holistic student support.
