The research aims to identify the characteristics and main tendencies of the functioning of names for church-related objects at different stages in the development of the Russian language. The scientific novelty of the research lies in analyzing dynamics in the development of church-related object lexis at the semantic and functional levels. As a result, the research concludes that often, the processes of functioning and reinterpretation of this lexico-semantic group are connected with the specific nature of the denotata and extra-linguistic factors. The thematic group of names for church utensils emerged from the outset as a set of lexical borrowings, primarily of Greek origin. Over time, this group was supplemented with terminology created within the Russian language itself. Church-related lexis associated with objects of church use has undergone a long developmental journey, experiencing significant changes both in quantity (reduction of group composition) and semantics. Currently, many lexemes have transcended purely religious use and are employed in various language styles, both independently and as part of set expressions.
