Introduction:The rise of drug-resistant tuberculosis has become a significant public health concern, representing a threat to global TB control programs.extensively drug resistant tuberculosis (XDR-TB) accounts for approximately 9% of drug-resistant cases and is increasing.The purpose of this study is to investigate the burden of this disease in six regions of the World Health Organization by gender from 1990 to 2019.Materials and Methods: Geographical distribution and trend of incidence rate, prevalence, years of life lost from mortality (YLL) and years lived with disability (YLD) for XDR-TB separately by two sex groups were investigated using geographic maps and trend plots.Results: The geographical distribution showed that in both sex groups, the rate of four indicators is the highest in Europe, and America has the lowest rates and is in the first quarter.For Africa, the incidence and prevalence and YLD is in the first quarter, too.The trend of incidence, prevalence and YLD was generally increasing in all regions, and only in the Western Pacific and Europe, a decreasing trend has been seen in recent years.In the case of YLL, in general, a stable or decreasing trend was observed in all regions in the last few years.Conclusion: Paying attention to the strategies that have been used, which have caused the trend of decreasing rates in some years, can provide policymakers with appropriate solutions to control XDR-TB.Also, paying special attention to Europe, which has the highest rates, as well as Southeast Asia and the Eastern Mediterranean and the implementation of effective strategies can greatly affect to the progress of TB control in the world.
