The article examines publications by domestic and foreign researchers from the late XX – early XXI century on the theory and history of photography. Historical, critical and philosophical approaches to the perception of the phenomenon of photography are analyzed. The evolution of photography is traced from a technical novelty to a means of visual expression and comprehension of reality, evolving from the method for mechanical fixation of reality to the work of art. The development of photography aligns with dominant societal sentiments and artistic styles. The influence of photography as one of the most lucid and effective means of mass media on public consciousness is explored. Conclusion dwells upon transition from the depiction of reality to subjective mental imagery, significantly shaping the development of new spiritual content.
