ISBN 9781250873385 11. 99 Reviewed from digital galleys Ad Gr. 7-12 After the unexpected death of her father, seventeen-year-old Enore Adesuwa emigrates from Nigeria to small town upstate New York, where she binge-watches teen movies to prepare for her upcoming senior year. She crafts essential rules for survival, like "Avoid interacting with or befriending anyone who is popular" and "Don't do anything to draw attention to yourself. " She quickly breaks both, however, End Page 363 when a chance encounter leads her to befriend popular Brazilian-American Davi Santiago, and when her Broadway caliber voice lands her the lead in the school's annual musical. Her unexpected romance and stardom quickly put her at odds with her tradition-minded mother, though, meaning Enore must decide just how Americanah she wants to be. For a novel intent on calling out teen film cliches, this debut reads like a checklist of teen lit tropes with little freshness. Enore is the typical awkward girl lured out of her shell by Davi, her sweetly supportive boyfriend. Their relationship is one of easy, immediate chemistry, their happiness broadened by his old friends becoming her new ones. Even her family is familiar, with a quirky younger sister and strict, future-focused immigrant mother. The core drama, meanwhile, is the common tale of risking parental disappointment by abandoning the practical career track to follow one's heart toward the arts, which ends predictably with a parental change of heart and an acceptance to Julliard. Still, a Nigerian-focused addition to the catalog of first- and second-generation centered romantic dramas is welcome, as are romantic leads who bond by sharing their cultural heritage. It's a solid choice for those who want a low-drama read or a fresh face in a recognizable story. Copyright © 2024 The Board of Trustees of the University of Illinois
