ChatGPT is an AI technology that has the power to reshape language teaching and learning. This study employs a mixed method to investigate Chinese learners' use and perceptions of ChatGPT in EAP. The data were collected via a questionnaire with 149 students and semi-structured interviews with 9 students from a joint program at a key Chinese university. This research reveals that students use ChatGPT as a personal learning assistant, especially in collating sources, academic vocabulary and academic writing. Generally, they hold positive attitudes toward it but a fair proportion remain unsure due to unfamiliarity. The overwhelming majority of students believe that ChatGPT is not a replacement due to the humanistic features of courses delivered by teachers, but it is a supplement to EAP courses in the future. This study adds empirical evidence from students' perspectives in Chinese context and helps educators better understand the implications of AI technologies in EAP. In light of these, educators could focus on providing systematic curricula, interactive teaching, and personalized assistance and feedback.
