The early history of the Armenian Highland cannot be comprehended outside the context of the history of its immediate neighbors. The ancient Near Eastern written sources of the 2nd millennium BC left a wealth of information about the states and “lands” of the Armenian Highland. Hittite written sources are particularly important, since they contain a great amount of information not only about the history of the states of the Armenian Highland but also about their culture and economy. Hittite cuneiform sources concerning the history of state formations of the Armenian Highland in the 2nd millennium BC are extremely important since in many cases they are the only written evidence. Thanks to these sources, published since the 1920s, numerous issues of the history, ethnic, social situation and spiritual culture of the state formations of the Armenian Highland were also studied.
