Key Points

  • International law shows contradictions concerning seabed mining and capitalist production.
  • Key insights derive from Rosa Luxemburg's framework on the accumulation of capital.
  • This article analyzes legal developments in the context of macro-monetary aspects of capitalism.
  • Understanding these contradictions may inform future policies on seabed mining and international law.

Abstract

Abstract The article draws on Rosa Luxemburg to examine current legal developments concerning seabed mining. Building on the macro-monetary reading of capitalism that Luxemburg developed in The Accumulation of Capital and the Anti-Critique, the analysis casts doubt on the international law of the sea’s alignment with the contradictions inherent in capitalist production.
