The archaeological monitoring and recording comprised the observation by a competent archaeologist of the machine excavation of three trenches located to expose extant gas pipes. Records were maintained and deposits were assessed for their palaeoenvironmental potential but no deposits were identified that required sampling. In August and September 2024, Cotswold Archaeology (CA) carried out archaeological monitoring and recording during groundworks associated with the updating of extant belowground gas pipelines in the South Street area of Exeter, Devon. The archaeological monitoring and recording confirmed that elements of Exeter City Wall are present immediately below the modern pavement surface on the south-western side of South Street, adjacent to the standing section of wall at this location. The below-ground wall structure has previously been impacted by a service trench in this area. A series of modern made ground deposits were also recorded. There was no evidence for earlier phases of South Street.
