The Human Sciences Research Council's Centre for Science, Technology and Innovation Indicators (HSRC-CeSTII) has undertaken the annual South African National Survey of Research and Experimental Development (R&D Survey) since 2001. The R&D Survey is commissioned by the Department of Science and Innovation (DSI) as a means of monitoring key Science, Technology and Innovation indicators. The survey collects statistics on R&D expenditure, personnel and activities as performed by the business, government, higher education, science council and not-for-profit organisation (NPO) sectors. The survey covers these five institutional sectors with five different questionnaires with a core set of questions common to all sectors, and additional items customised to each sector.
