This paper highlights key aspects of European legislation and critical bibliographical points related to insect rearing for animal feed and human consumption. According to current literature, insect- derived proteins are increasingly favored over traditional meat-based proteins. Achieving significant energy and water savings remains a primary goal, as these factors are essential for managing carbon and nitrogen cycles and reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the agri-food sector. The gradual integration of nitrogen and insect-derived oily fats into the food chain is a realistic and attainable objective, supporting the expansion of sustainable practices within the agribusiness industry. This approach offers a promising pathway for advancing sustainability and resource efficiency in food production.
