The Study area for the assessment encompasses the area over which the Scheme could be reasonably expected to have an effect. With respect to archaeology, this generally only relates to the areas anticipated to be directly disturbed by the proposed works. However, consideration of a wider Study area outside the Site is necessary. For the Scheme both designated and non-designated heritage assets have been assessed within the Site, plus a 500m buffer. This is considered a wide enough area to take into account any impacts on designated heritage assets and/or changes to their setting and has allowed a consideration of all known archaeological remains, which may indicate the potential for further unrecorded archaeological remains within the Site. The 500m Study area is considered sufficient to produce a comprehensive baseline for the Site, to facilitate an understanding of the archaeological potential within the Site, its historic significance and identify any heritage assets which require due consideration with regard to relevant law and policy in the development of the Site. The historic environment baseline for the Site has been established from the following sources: An examination of the local and national planning policies in relation to the historic environment; A search of the National Heritage List for England (NHLE) for Listed Buildings, Registered Parks and Gardens, Scheduled Monuments, World Heritage Sites and Registered Battlefields within the Study area; A search of the Greater Manchester Historic Environment Record (HER) for archaeological sites, findspots and other non-designated heritage assets within the Study area; An examination of the relevant published and unpublished archaeological and historic sources e.g. journals and historic records; An examination of topographical and geological evidence; A map regression exercise using historic maps, as available online, to determine previous land use of the site; and A review of the Bury draft Local List and criteria for local heritage listing. 7.1 Conclusion This assessment has been carried out to assess the likely archaeological and built heritage impacts of the development proposals at the Redvales School, Bury. This assessment has incorporated a review of the available data from the Greater Manchester HER within the Study areas. This assessment is designed to inform the planning submission to help avoid, mitigate and justify design work which may adversely impact the historic environment. The proposed works off Radcliffe Road, Bury include the provision of a new 60 place social, emotional, and mental health (SEMH) special secondary school for students aged 11 through 16. The extent and new location of blocks is yet to be confirmed. This survey has established that within the Site boundary, there are no designated heritage assets or non-designated heritage assets included on local lists or the HER. Within the 500m Study area, there are four grade II listed buildings southeast of the Site. Within the 500m Study area, there are also six non-designated records from the HER, comprising two churches, several residential properties, the site of a former cottage, and the site of a former farm. There are no anticipated physical or permanent impact on designated heritage assets due to their distance from the Site, mature vegetation, and a lack of intervisibility between the assets and the Site. The archaeological potential for remains surviving at the land off Radcliffe Road, Bury has been assessed as low for the prehistoric to modern periods. Prehistoric activity and settlement have been identified within the wider Redvales and Radcliffe areas situated around the River Irwell and River Roch.
