This document is a Section 110 report that comprises the first of two volumes for the archaeological investigation of CA-SBA-212 on Vandenberg Air Force Base. This volume presents the previous archaeological work that has occurred on archaeological site CA-SBA-212 and the scope of the current effort. It then provides a context for site interpretations by summarizing the natural and cultural setting, including a discussion of the current environment as observed during an inspection of the area surrounding the site. The research design to guide both the process and the interpretations is also discussed. Methods used during fieldwork, laboratory processing, and technical analyses are described. Site structure is detailed, including the natural stratigraphy and archaeological stratigraphy as well as archaeological features. The report also examines site chronology and defines units of analysis. Several chapters present the results of technical analyses for lithic artifacts, vertebrate fauna, and invertebrate fauna, respectively. Additional discussion addresses miscellaneous cultural materials, including archaeobotanical remains, fire-altered rock, asphaltum, and pigment. Interpretations of the data are thoroughly discussed along with management recommendations and a bibliography of references cited completes Volume I of the report.
