Madatyaya (alcoholism) is a major socio-economic and health problem that affects not only individuals but also their families and society at large. It is a disorder caused by improper and excessive consumption of alcohol over a prolonged period, which may lead to dependence and withdrawal symptoms. In Ayurveda, Madatyaya is described as a Tridoshaja Vyadhi resulting from faulty intake of Madya, which vitiates Agni, Ojas, and Manas. According to classical texts, alcohol acts as nectar when consumed properly but behaves like poison when misused. The Ayurvedic management of Madatyaya primarily includes Shodhana (purificatory therapies), Shamana (palliative treatment), Rasayana (rejuvenation therapy), and Satvavajaya Chikitsa (psychotherapy). Several recent clinical studies have explored the role of Panchakarma procedures, internal medications, and Medhya-Rasayana drugs in the management of Madatyaya and withdrawal symptoms. This review attempts to compile and analyze available classical references and recent research studies to highlight effective Ayurvedic treatment modalities in the management of Madatyaya.
