The purpose of the research is to theoretically substantiate the role of social institutions in the quality management system of organizations. The methodological basis of the study is the main provisions of the process of penetration of quality standards into the activities of organizations, conditioned by the action of social institutions and their stratification. To disclose these provisions, scientific methods of comparison, hypotheses, and cause-and-effect are used. Research result. The theoretical question of the existence of a quality management system in an organization is raised. Attention is paid to the social institutions that underlie the quality management system. Their classification is carried out. State executive bodies, communities, organizations, social regulators that are part of the social institutions of the quality management system in the Russian Federation are distinguished. Attention is paid to transnational corporations and their participation in the process of penetration of international quality standards. The status of institutions is determined within the process of penetration of quality standards into the activities of organizations and groups of individuals. The issue of stratification of individuals and their groups in the scalar chain of control in the quality management system is studied. Social statuses and the phenomenon of status mismatch that may arise when determining the role of an individual or group of individuals in this process are studied. The prospects of the research lie in the theoretical understanding of the quality management system as a result of the conducted research.
