Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a frequent reason for hospitalization and serious complications in hospitalized patients. It has been associated with various adverse outcomes including morbidity and mortality, as well as longer hospital stays, a high readmission rate, dependency, and increased health-related costs. The lack of knowledge regarding the characteristics and management of severe AKI occurring outside the intensive care unit constitutes a barrier to the development of clinical practice guidelines for this specific entity.
