Aging is associated with sarcopenia, defined as a reduction in skeletal muscle mass and strength and physical function. Sarcopenia decreases the ability to perform activities of daily living, reduces quality of life, and increases the risk of falls and associated injuries. The Japanese Orthopaedic Association defines locomotive syndrome (LOCOMO) as a condition of reduced mobility due to impairment of locomotive organs, such as those involving bones, skeletal muscles, and joints. Sarcopenia is classified as one of the locomotor disorders associated with LOCOMO. The progression of sarcopenia and LOCOMO results in a decline in gait and balance owing to musculoskeletal disorders and functional decline. The 2020 World Health Organization guidelines strongly advocate increased physical activity and participation in strength training among older adults, emphasizing the significant health benefits of muscle strengthening.
