Given the widespread use of tricyclo3.2.1.02,7octene scaffolds in natural medicinal chemistry and biology, the development of methods for their synthesis remains important. Here, a palladium-catalyzed sequential 4 + 2-cycloaddition/decarboxylation/intramolecular Diels-Alder reaction of 2-pyranones with 1,3-dienes is described for the direct access to valuable tricyclo3.2.1.02,7octenes with moderate to excellent yields and regioselectivities.
