Despite the generally increasing awareness of the importance of sun protection, the myth persists that individuals with skin of colour (SoC) are largely exempt from the need for sunscreen. This misconception is based on the partial truth that higher levels of melanin in the skin do provide some natural photoprotection; however, it ignores the complexities of dermatological risks and the needs of people with SoC. The myth is perpetuated by content prevalent on social media platforms. Here, we explore this discourse, as the underuse of sunscreen by individuals with SoC remains a public health oversight with dermatological, oncological and cosmetic consequences.
