This project investigates the performance of propellers for direct-drive, electric, outboard motors, using the Zparq Z10 electric outboard motor as the test platform. As the marine transport sector moves toward sustainable alternatives, optimizing propeller performance is a critical factor in improving overall system efficiency. To address this, a custom test rig was designed and built to enable accurate, real-world measurements of propeller efficiency. Tests were conducted on several different propeller designs, manufactured using both aluminium and 3D-printed plastic. A repeatable test cycle was developed, and key performance metrics such as advancement ratio and thrust efficiency were analysed using a load cell, GNSS determined speed, torque and RPM. Results show that the test rig works well and that resin is a suitable material for 3D-printing prototype propellers. This work contributes to the broader goal of accelerating the electrification of small marine vessels by providing practical, cost-effective testing methodologies that small companies can adopt without major development costs.
