Abstract

This series (Fixation and Selection) investigates the same phenomenon within each round of the Life Cycle Table: the fourth step (fixation) forecloses the first step (selection). This essay unfolds Round 4 (13DD–16DD): how bilateral non-doubt (16DD) forecloses self-awareness (13DD). Round 4's foreclosure is personal — external 16DD (the family of origin being every person's first encounter) precedes the individual's 13DD; self-awareness emerges within fixation, and emergence itself is negation. This essay distinguishes four kinds of pain — cultivation pain (unfulfillment, intolerability) and colonization pain (foreclosure, inescapability) — and four responses: covert pursuit, confrontation, covert forking, escape. Round 4's unique feature is reflexivity: the chisel knows the construct is foreclosing it. 16DD is irrevocable; there is no bridge. The way out lies in living mutual recognition — maintaining 13DD's vitality through sustained mutual chiseling between concrete persons.
