Purpose The purpose of this study is to elicit the managerial and employees' viewpoints on high-performance work systems (HPWS) in the Indian healthcare system. Design/methodology/approach By adopting the mixed methods approach, the authors interviewed 26 HR personnel and also collected 407 employees' responses from six Indian private tertiary care hospitals regarding high-performance work practices (HPWPs). Findings The findings demonstrated that HRs perspectives on contribution of HPWPs for the improvement in desired performance results varied in the Indian healthcare. Furthermore, some HR experts have expressed scepticism regarding the presence of a few key HPWPs in their respective firms, citing concerns about their successful implementation. In addition, capturing the real-time data from the employees has revealed the level of HPWS acceptance among the employees and the underlying dynamics in shaping their attitudes and behaviours. Originality/value Marking its uniqueness in gathering in-depth insights from the multiple stakeholders of healthcare institutions in India, the study emphasized distinct challenges and prospects that practitioners and managers are encountering while attempting to successfully adopt and implement the HPWS in Indian healthcare.
