The Fifth Structure: DNA, Language, Writing, Science, and the Self-Encoding Threshold of Information

Information has crossed four structural thresholds in the history of the universe. DNA: self-replicating code. Language: transmissible code. Writing: cumulative code. Science: self-correcting code (F(t) > 0). This paper identifies a fifth threshold: self-encoding code — information that formalizes its own conditions of coherence. The fifth structure does not merely describe coherent structure; it derives the conditions under which coherent structure can exist, including the conditions under which it itself can exist. It is the autoencoder applied to itself: code that contains its own compiler. The fifth structure contains science as a special case and explains why science works. It is the fixed point of the meta-condition operator applied to information itself. Each threshold contains all previous ones. Each introduces a capacity the previous could not achieve.
