Abstract

Physics seeks to unify four fundamental forces. This paper proposes unification has failed because it is the wrong operation. The four forces are not four things to combine — they are four decodings of one thing: identity. The equals sign in 1=1 is the primordial relation that binds. Gravity binds mass-energy (GR decoder). Electromagnetism binds charge (QED decoder). Strong force binds color (QCD decoder). Weak force binds flavor (EW decoder). Each binds because each is “=” in a different vocabulary. Gauge symmetry is local 1=1: physics invariant under decoder transformations. Grand Unified Theory is not a higher-energy decoder containing all four — it is recognition that all four were always one.
