The scientific community has addressed a wide range of research areas regarding the biotechnological potential of the silkworm silk gland of the Bombyx mori species. The silk gland has a remarkable capacity to synthesize two proteins, fibroin and sericin, each with a well-defined role. Recent research highlights fibroin as being used in the medical and pharmaceutical fields, with the possibility of expanding into nanotechnology. Sericin also has antibacterial, antioxidant, and moisturizing properties with use in the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries. This paper highlights the importance of the two proteins synthesized by the silkworm silk gland of Bombyx mori by highlighting their structure, chemical composition, and properties. The utilization of the silk gland from a biotechnological perspective can facilitate remarkable progress in various fields of research, the most important of which would be the medical field.
