Abstract

Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel is one of the foremost nation builders of modern India whose contribution was not limited to the freedom movement but proved crucial in shaping the political and administrative structure of independent India. During the Indian national movement, he emphasized organization, discipline, and practical politics, and adopted pragmatic nationalism instead of emotional idealism. His political thought was based on the concepts of a strong central government, robust administration, and national unity. As India's first Home Minister after independence, Sardar Patel resolved the complex problem of the integration of princely states, thereby ensuring India's geographical and political integrity, for which he is considered the architect of national unity. He also laid the foundation of an efficient, impartial, and disciplined administrative system by supporting the establishment of the All India Services, which he called the backbone of India's unity and stability. His role in the constitution-making process was also significant, where he advocated for granting sufficient powers to the central government within the federal framework to maintain national unity. This research paper aims to analyze Sardar Patel's political ideas and to provide a comprehensive assessment of his contributions to the process of Indian nation-building particularly the integration of princely states, the establishment of the All India Services, and constitutional development.
